Since my early childhood in Iowa, I have always been involved in athletics.  No matter what time of year, I was busy training and competing.  Through hard work and dedication, I was able to become a 2-Time Division I All-American in a sport regarded by many as one of the ultimate tests of endurance and strength…wrestling.  After college, I continued to be involved in the sport by coaching a variety of levels of athletes until I moved to Colorado from Iowa.

Over the years that followed, my physical conditioning began to deteriorate due to starting a family, work and unavoidable aging.  I fell into the trap of thinking that I could run a couple times a week, lift a few weights, eat what I thought was healthy and in my mind I felt that I was doing the things necessary to stay fit.  The only problem was that it was not effective!  My 30-40 minute runs where not helping me lose any weight, no matter how hard I thought I was running.  I was constantly sore due to repetitive motions and a loss of flexibility.  I soon became bored, which made my workouts less frequent.  My diet was full of carbohydrates with not enough proteins and I tried to avoid fats at all costs.  This lifestyle did not produce the positive outcomes that I was looking for in a fitness program.  Also, I was never able to satisfy the competitive side of my personality.  This was mostly accomplished in golf, not in anything athletic.

My world was turned upside down several years ago when Ashley introduced me to CrossFit.  She had just attended her level 1 certification and the first thing she told me when she returned is that I needed to give CrossFit a try…it was exactly what I was looking for!  For me, all it took was a couple workouts and I was a believer.  I began by doing WOD’s from the mainsite at the recreation center and it soon turned into going to a CrossFit Box (gym).  I discovered a workout method that was first and foremost a lot of fun.  Every day it was something new and challenging, both mentally and physically.  I have yet to be bored with working out after consistently training for 3 ½ years.  My body composition has completely changed as I have gotten both stronger and leaner at the same time due to the nature of the workouts (Constantly varied workouts, using functional or compound movements, high intensity training, across different time domains), as well as regaining my flexibility.  I truly feel like I have found my fountain of youth!  Lastly, there is element of competition that CrossFit provides that I had been missing.  Competing against a clock or other individuals adds another dimension to my workouts….lately my biggest challenge is trying to keep up with Ashley!  She is amazing!

There is nothing more gratifying to me then being able to share my love of CrossFit and Fitness with others to positively impact their lives.  I look forward to welcoming you to our CrossFit Community at BackCountry CrossFit!

Growing up in Texas, I was involved in cheerleading, numerous sports and was a competitive gymnast; you can say competition was part of my life. After college, I added running to my workouts and completed 2 marathons and dozens of half-marathons. I finally found CrossFit in 2008, when I was looking for something different. That is when my adventure began…

I was scared of CrossFit when I first heard about it as the movements seemed so hard and I could not believe that I could get the workout I needed in 5-45 minutes a day. I began slowly as I was skeptical, but every day after a CrossFit workout I became more and more convinced that this was what I had been missing, and then I became hooked! Once I finally committed to CrossFit being my lifestyle it changed me on all levels. It not only changed my body, but it changed my overall health lowering my cholesterol, blood pressure, body fat and weight. I knew I had found my passion and wanted to share that with everyone and change their life like CrossFit has changed mine.

I look forward to showing marathon runners, tri-athletes, and endurance athletes how you can train harder and more efficiently to compete in your events while becoming stronger and faster through CrossFit.

Come in and try Crossfit, I promise you will be glad you did!!

I grew up in the corn fields of Indiana where I learned important family values and to passionately work hard at everything that comes your way. With these life lessons I have been able to complete college, obtain a masters in leadership and commit a lifetime to my beautiful wife, Jen. While life has been nonstop with school, jobs, and building a family, I have managed to make health and fitness a priority.

I played soccer for fourteen years, spend the winter season in the mountains skiing, during off season I mountain bike and hike. These hobbies are nothing more than hobbies but my hardworking nature has forced me to improve in each of these areas. This is when CrossFit became a part of my life.
Six months after Backcountry CrossFit (BCCF) opened their doors I found myself falling in love with not another hobby but a lifestyle that puts all my passions into play, family values, hard work, health, fitness and ultimately serving others through these avenues. It is a dream come true and an honor to work for BCCF and serve all the athletes that call BCCF a place of fitness and community.

I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ. Since as long as I could remember, I have always been an athlete and had a love for the outdoors. Although I played many sports,  I mainly focused on football, baseball and wrestling in high school. Now I enjoy hunting, biking, hiking, or any adventure for that matter. When I was in high school I would often travel to Colorado for football camps at Colorado University, I had always hoped I would eventually end up here. From my childhood  to my adult life I spent time in many different gyms, everything from boxing gyms to your typical fitness facility.

I started CrossFit in May of 2012. Immediately after being exposed to the atmosphere I knew it was a place where I could excel. I loved it! I was completely addicted! The box I first attended was very competitive and taught me things that I never knew were possible, such as a muscle up. I spent hours daily in your standard gym, but never felt the competitive drive or physical pump that I experienced in a CrossFit facility. Since my first experience at CrossFit I knew where I needed to be. I wanted something more, to contribute, and help others along their CrossFit journey.

I moved to Colorado in November of 2012 on a mission to pursue my dream of becoming a CrossFit coach. I worked in numerous gyms in the area to help develop the leadership needed from a coaching aspect. I found it came pretty easy due to the leadership and guidance I had offered to others in the past. When I got offered the job at BCCF I was honored and grateful to finally be in a family working environment and to actually be doing something I love.

I'm a jock.  I've always been a jock.  It all started at 4 years of age, with snow skiing with Dad, and of course, my first hockey team.  Eventually playing baseball, football, dabbling in gymnastics, and bicycle motocross.  As time passed, tournament softball teams and recreational leagues took the place of competitive endeavors, but I always played hockey.  Then, in my mid-twenties, I was asked to coach an all female ice hockey team that had never won a game in three seasons.  I reluctantly agreed.  I fell in love.  No, not with one of the women, but with coaching.  And yes, we eventually won that first game and oh what a party they had.

I strayed away from competition with age, but always stayed in the gym.  I would put in up to sometimes three hours a day at a globogym beating myself up with the same movements in a regimented routine.  My body suffered the effects of my monotonous training.  But yet still, I wanted to teach and train others to feel like I did.  I looked into several different certifications to be a personal trainer.  Then I found CrossFit.  One Monday night last year, the Monday Night Football game was a sleeper.  I pushed up on the remote control and found the CrossFit Games on ESPN2.  I actually set the remote down and said “Whoa. I'm gonna do that.”  Shortly thereafter I walked (rather unsurely if you asked Ashley) into BackCountry CrossFit for the first time.  Game over.  I knew right then, how I wanted to train, and what I wanted to coach.

I am truly humbled, as well as honored, to be included in the BackCountry CrossFit family as one of your coaches and I hope I get to make a difference in your quest to become the fittest, strongest, and healthiest you that you can be.

I am a Colorado native and as I think back on my childhood, the majority of my fondest memories involve sport competitions.  From a young age I was active in numerous sports, the more time I could spend playing a sport, the happier I was.  I was a shy kid but I always felt comfortable on a field; my parents used to say they knew something was wrong with me if I was inside and not outside playing a sport. As I got older soccer became my passion; I played soccer throughout high school and competitively through my early twenties.

My “sports time” changed when I married my wonderful wife, Brooke, and we had our 2 beautiful children.  When time allowed I was still competing in soccer and basketball on men’s teams in the Denver area; as well as going to the gym to keep myself in shape.  I did consider myself to be pretty fit but still never saw the physical results I was really looking for.   I was always reading magazines and searching the internet for the next “program” that I was going to try in the weight room; and each time my performance would plateau and I would be bored and searching again.

A friend and I started talking about this new “program” called CrossFit that we had been hearing about and seeing on TV.  After talking to a few BCCF members I decided to go give their class a try.  I remember not wanting to mess up my routine so I went to the gym and lifted prior to going to our first CrossFit WOD.  Again, I considered myself a fairly fit guy but was completely humbled after the 15 minute WOD that left me laid out on the ground, gasping for my next breath.  This feeling left me wondering what I had been doing wrong in the weight room for the past 10 years, since I had never, ever reached this point after my daily 1 hour lifting sessions.  I was immediately hooked and haven’t looked back.

I have seen more changes from CrossFit then I ever imagined possible.  It feeds my competitive personality, I have more energy, my body is continually changing, and I have learned about nutrition and the way it affects my fitness performance.   I pride myself on teaching my kids healthy habits and BCCF gives me a way to set a good example for them.  It is also something my wife and I enjoy doing together.

I am honored to be part of the BCCF team and as a coach I want to share my love of fitness and competition with others.  I look forward to helping our members accomplish their physical and personal goals through CrossFit.  The community that Ashley and Steve have created is incomparable.  We work hard, push each other, build each other up, and have fun doing it!

Athletics has been a passion and a part of my identity for as long as I can remember.  From my childhood all the way up through high school, my days were filled with football, basketball, and baseball.  With the onset of my college years I decided to bring my athletic interests to a new level and began training in number of martial arts including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Sambo, Boxing, and Wrestling.  After many years and a number of sanctioned fights I made the move from fighter to coach.  This is where CrossFit first became a part of my life.  With a team of boxers, MMA fighters, and grapplers, I needed a more versatile and effective way to prepare my fighter’s fitness levels for competition.  I was introduced to CrossFit and was skeptical at first.  Like so many others, I didn’t understand how a 15 – 20 minute workout could result in better overall fitness levels than a two hour workout full of isolation weight lifting and running.  My skepticism was soon put to rest through a stream of first round MMA victories and several Golden Gloves championships brought home to my gym.

After moving on from the world of combat sports, I found myself skipping from fitness program to fitness program while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Each program provided results, yet I found myself growing bored and moving on to a new one after only a few months.   After adopting CrossFit as my own personal program, I finally discovered what was missing.  I needed a sport, not just a workout.  Sports provide competitors both physical and mental challenges while also developing a strong sense of comradery amongst the team.  They create a support system whereby your teammates challenge you to perform at your best.  CrossFit embodies each of those, challenging participants to push themselves physically and mentally while creating a strong sense of “team” whereby everyone from the most to the least fit is encouraged. This encouragement not only pushes me resulting in rapid changes to my physique, but also gives me something to look forward to each day.

I’ve worked as a fitness professional since 2006 and have held a number of certifications including an ANSI Accredited CrossFit Level 1 Coach since 2008. My favorite aspect of working as a CrossFit coach is watching members progress and accomplish feats that they have previously thought impossible.

A Denver native, I grew up playing some sport or activity just about every season of the year. By high school, I was focused on football and track. Then followed by a few years of rugby.

By my mid-20's though, too many years of bad habits and not staying active took its toll on me. One morning, I woke up, got on my bike and started to ride. That led to cycling almost every day, hitting the gym regularly, and taking up whitewater kayaking. Despite being active again and "eating right," I still wasn't fit. I was over weight, had chronic muscle pain and chronic headaches.

In 2011, a colleague asked me if I had heard of CrossFit. I hadn't, but decided checked it out. I was immediately hooked. A few months later, after some self-coaching and modifying workouts to make due at local gym, I came across Backcountry CrossFit. They opened their doors to me, giving me better fitness, better habits and better health.

Every day, I look forward to sharing my excitement and passion with others and to expanding our Backcountry community.
