About BackCountry CrossFit

What is:

BackCountry CrossFit:

A strength and conditioning facility that develops individuals of all levels of fitness through constantly varied functional movements preformed at high intensity.  The workouts are fun, fast-paced and designed to provide maximum results under the supervision of our 6 Full-Time and 5 part-time CrossFit certified coaches.  Our training methods produce undisputed, tangible results for all levels of fitness; from children to professional athletes (we have trained NFL, NHL, MLB athletes) and everything in between.

BackCountry CrossFit…. your HOME for CrossFit in Highlands Ranch!

CrossFit:

Efficiently combines the most effective training methods of Endurance, Weightlifting, Gymnastics, and High Intensity Cardio. There isn't a strength and conditioning program anywhere that works with a greater diversity of tools, modalities, and drills. We train incredibly hard; harder than most thought they were capable of…everyday our athletes break down barriers and set new standards for themselves.  Our training is intense, and it creates a bond among members that can't be manufactured.  Together we sweat, we expose weaknesses and we get stronger.  The community aspect of CrossFit is our greatest strength.  At BackCountry there are no egos, no room for bad attitudes.  Those types of people just don't last here.  We are supportive, we are competitive, we are strong, we are humble, we are athletes...we are BackCountry.

Family Owned by Steve and Ashley Hartle

We first discovered CrossFit in 2007 while owning and operating another fitness facility.  We received our CrossFit Level 1 certifications and also purchased our Affiliate early in 2008.  CrossFit was the perfect fit to match our backgrounds.

  • Steve was a 2x Division 1 All-American Wrestler from Iowa and has over 20 years of coaching experience.  With his experience in training and coaching, it made a natural fit for him to be the Head Coach at BackCountry.
  • Ashley was a competitive Gymnast, Runner and Cheerleader.  While Ashley enjoyed athletics, it is school and business where she excels.  She has a double major in Marketing and International Business, a Master’s in Business (MBA) and 18 years business experience at a top 5 Private company.  This experience allows her to oversee the business aspects at BackCountry.

How we started:

One thing that we feel is extremely important to be successful coaches is that you need to put the time into your trade.  Getting a Level 1 Certification is only the start…anyone can get the cert, not everyone can coach.  We spent the next couple years training, learning and coaching.  Also, due to our travel we have visited well over 100 other CrossFit Boxes across the country to gain knowledge, experience and best practices.  Six months before we opened our doors to the community, we trained a small group of individuals at no cost in our garage to practice our programming and further sharpen our coaching skills.  After 3 1/2 years of coaching CrossFit for other boxes and training out of our garage; we decided that it was time to open our own facility in 2011.

It takes time and experience to become a great CrossFit Coach.  You have to know the proper ways to get people to move correctly, when to scale or modify a move/weight, how to read athletes and most importantly keep everyone safe.

Our Coaches…Our Family

6 Full-Time Coaches:

Great Coaching is what makes a box.  Our job is to teach, motivate and most importantly create a fun and safe environment.  In order to do this at the highest level, we employ Full-Time coachesWe have 6 coaches whose only job is coaching CrossFit! To us, CrossFit is not a hobby…This is our full-time professional occupation.  We average THREE coaches per class in order to keep our ratio of athlete-to-coach low (8:1 is our goal) and classes are  always led by one or more full time coaches.  Lastly, it is imperative that our coaches continue their CrossFit training and education through certifications, as well as compete at the sport of CrossFit.
